Berlin S ticket

Where and how long the ticket is valid:

• The ticket is valid only in Berlin AB. Extension tickets are available for journeys to destinations in zone C (Berlin's hinterland).
• The ticket is issued to a specific person and is non-transferable.
• The ticket is valid from the first to the last day in a month (plus on the last day of the previous month and first day of the following month). Example: If you have a ticket for October, you can also use it on 30 September and 1 November.

Am I entitled to the Berlin-Ticket S?

For example, Berliners who receive the following social benefits are entitled to discounted access to regional and local public transport through the Berlin Ticket S social ticket:

• Bürgergeld (formerly Hartz IV)
• social assistance (Sozialhilfe)
• basic security (Grundsicherung)
• benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act (Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz)
• housing allowance (Wohngeld)
• victims' pensions under the SED Unrechtsbereinigungsgesetz 
• Nazi compensation pensions

Recipients of ALG 1 (Arbeitslosengeld 1) are not allowed to use the Berlin-Ticket.

This is what you need for the authorization:

1. A "proof of work" or "notice of benefit" (Leistungsbescheid) or alternatively a "proof of entitlement to use the Berlin-Ticket S".
   
   These documents will only be sent to you by the respective service centers. This usually happens automatically, you do not have to do anything. Only in exceptional cases do you have to apply for them yourself. Find out more on the Service-Portal Berlin (German).
   
   You can use a copy of your benefit certificate and even black it out.
   However, the following information on the benefit certificate must remain legible:
   - Header sheet
   - Heading/subject
   - Surname and first name of the person using the benefit notification
   - period of approval.
   All other information (e.g. the amount of benefits or account details) can be blacked out.
   
   "Notices of benefit" (Leistungsbescheide) for the legal area of "citizen's allowance" (Bürgergeld, SGB II), which are provided digitally in the "Jobcenter app", are also recognized. A digital "notice of benefit" is only valid when the document is opened in the "Jobcenter app". Screenshots are not recognized.
   
   During the journey, you must also carry a government-issued photo ID, e.g. an identity card or as a school student from the age of 16 the school student's ID and the value section of the ticket (available see "Purchase" tab) with your first name and surname entered.
2. Expiring model: VBB customer cards Berlin S that are still valid with a photo and the value section of the ticket with the first name and surname entered will be recognized until the end of their remaining validity.

Note: If you still have a ticket in the old layout with a number entered instead of your first name and surname, it will be valid until the expiry date.
